A Cherokee County School District educator has been selected as an elite National STEM Scholar!

Dean Rusk Middle School sixth-grade science teacher Lindsey Mason earned the prestigious honor from the National STEM Scholars Program.  Only 10 middle school science educators in the nation are selected each year!

The award includes: attendance at the National Science Teachers Association conference in St. Louis, a week of professional development at The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science and The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University in June, up to $2,500 for a Challenge Project with her students and a Chromebook.  All expenses, including travel costs, materials, mentoring and Challenge Project supplies are covered by a grant from the National Stem Cell Foundation.

During their professional development conference this summer, Scholars will engage in “hands-on, minds-on science activities; connect with speakers and thought leaders in STEM education; learn with skilled science educators; and develop a creative Challenge Project for classroom implementation,” according to the program.

Mentoring will be provided throughout the year by Western Kentucky University faculty. The Scholars will share their success with colleagues while attending the National Science Teachers Association annual meeting in March 2019.
